So what’s my story?: Corporate Ladder and Embracing Authenticity

Building a career in the corporate world is never a linear journey. It’s a path paved with ambition, resilience, and countless learning moments—both uplifting and challenging. My story is one of navigating the complexities of corporate politics, micro- and macro-aggressive work environments, and self-discovery, while striving to remain authentic and true to my purpose.

The Journey Begins

I entered the corporate world with a strong foundation in computer science and mathematics, armed with a determination to make my mark. Starting out, I quickly learned that technical skills alone weren’t enough to climb the ladder. Soft skills—like communication, influence, and emotional intelligence—were essential for navigating the intricate dynamics of the workplace.

But as a woman of color in predominantly white spaces, the challenges were amplified. From subtle biases to overt microaggressions, I had to work twice as hard to prove my value while fighting to be seen and heard. These experiences taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, strategic thinking, and self-advocacy.

Learning to Navigate Corporate Politics

Corporate politics are unavoidable, but they don’t have to define you. Early in my career, I encountered situations where decisions were influenced more by relationships than by merit. It was frustrating but also enlightening. I began to understand that the “rules” of corporate success often operate below the surface.

I leaned on mentors—some of whom challenged me more than they supported me. They taught me how to strategically position myself, manage relationships across all levels of the organization, and identify opportunities to showcase my skills.

Finding My Voice

One of the turning points in my career came when I stepped into the role of Chief of Staff. This position demanded that I operate at the intersection of strategy, execution, and leadership. It required me to be an honest broker and fact-teller, navigating departmental silos and providing leadership with a comprehensive, unbiased perspective.

It was in this role that I truly embodied my authentic self. I learned to trust my voice, advocate for myself and others, and lead with confidence. I stopped trying to conform to expectations that didn’t align with my values or strengths. Instead, I leaned into my unique perspective and skill set, using them to drive meaningful change.

Embracing Growth and Sharing the Lessons

With two decades of experience across diverse organizations and industries, I’ve learned that growth is not about perfection; it’s about evolution. Every challenge, setback, and triumph has shaped me into the leader I am today.

Through TISM Connect, I’m now channeling those lessons into helping others navigate their own journeys. Whether it’s breaking through systemic barriers, developing strategies for growth, or finding your authentic voice, I believe my story can serve as a toolkit for others.

Staying Authentic

What I’m most proud of is that, through it all, I remained true to myself. I didn’t compromise my values or my identity to fit into spaces that weren’t designed for me. Instead, I redefined those spaces and created my own opportunities.

My story isn’t just about climbing the corporate ladder—it’s about thriving on my own terms and empowering others to do the same. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that every step, no matter how challenging, is worth it when you’re pursuing your purpose.
